Sydney, Isabelle, and Watson moved up the path with Max in tow, engaged in a lively discussion about spirits, providing Eidolon and me with some much-needed privacy. Although I felt a little awkward to be alone with him, I was grateful for the time to talk.
âWhat do you think?â Eidolon whispered to me as we walked slightly behind everyone else. âDo you believe him?â
âI do,â I said with firmness. âSomething tells me to trust him.â
âMe too,â Eidolon sighed, looking out over the countryside. As the rain made another appearance on the Scottish landscape, the dark skies and light rain created an unworldly atmosphere. A fog engulfed the forest, so thick that even the birds were silent under its grip.
Only the river to our left suggested the world was not at a standstill. Flowing over rocks and shifting riverbanks, it no longer sang a mournful and inviting tune. Now, it sounded like a plea to stay away, and I was inclined to agree.
âWhy?â he asked after a pause. I had been wondering the same thing. Why bother going through all this trouble of stealing books and hiding them?
âI donât know,â I answered honestly. âBut I know what it is like to be willing to do anything if it means bringing someone back.â
I understood what he meant and couldnât blame whoever took the Book of the Veiled. This whole scenario brought back memories of my desperate moments when I was overwhelmed by grief and the desperate need to talk to the dead. I would have done anything for five extra minutes with them.
To say, âI am sorry.â
To say, âIt should have been me.â
I pushed away the dark thoughts and focused on the problem at hand. âThe real question is, why does he need the Book of the Veiled if he found the Elixir of Life?â
âThe Book of the Veiled chronicles the secrets people donât want to admit. It recounts human and supernatural misdeeds, explores potential futures, and reveals the true history that has been hidden away. Without its pages, one can reinterpret the past however they wish.â Eidolonâs eyes narrowed, determination settling on them like a warm blanket in winter.
âWhat if the book was not stolen to bring back one person- but to bring back all of them?â he asked.
âAll of who? The supernatural? That doesnât make any sense!â I said, but I wasnât even convincing myself.
It kind of weirdly made sense. In recent years, magick and myths have enjoyed a comeback. Old religions were being reexamined, practices once banned were now accepted, and everyone wanted a piece of the magickal pie. I wasnât immune to it myselfâtrips to Orlando to visit Harry Potter Land, magickal wands, and dragon incense holders. I even had a book on how to read Tarot cards on my bookshelf.
âThe Book of the Veiled did more than hide the supernatural from humans. It also weakened their powers so much that they disappeared. What if the person who stole the books was not only interested in bringing back the dead? What if it was more than that?â
I nodded slowly, following Eidolonâs thought process.
